B1: SWIMMING BY PEOPLE OF A COLD COUNTRY

In Finland, many people enjoy ice swimming, even in the coldest months. Katja Pantzar, a writer living in Helsinki, first tried ice swimming when it was -10°C. She jumped into a hole in the ice wearing only a swimsuit, a hat, and gloves. At first, the water felt painful. But soon she felt happy, warm, and full of energy.

Now, Pantzar swims in icy water almost every day. She believes this is one reason why Finns are some of the happiest people in the world. Scientists agree. Cold water helps the body release happy hormones like endorphins and serotonin. These chemicals improve mood, reduce stress, and help with pain.

Pantzar also enjoys warming up in the sauna after swimming. This helps the body relax and improves blood flow. While it may sound strange, ice swimming and sauna use are everyday activities in Finland, and many say they feel great afterward.
